New Orleans -- A Friday pep rally at Newman School cheered on a favorite son who was Newman green before he was a Giant -- the Manning named Eli.
"We all rally around those boys and its been exciting not only to see Eli playing in the superbowl but we know the guy and we now him well," said Eli's former coach, Bradley Farris.
At Newman, Eli's storied family is the stuff of legend. A 1999 graduate of the school, the youngest Manning was destined for greatness.
Genie McCloskey taught him Kindergarten art. "I'd see Archie with his boys. He'd be throwing the footballs to the little bitty boys and Eli would be one of them."
"The nicknames he's had, Easy and Easy E, are because he takes everything easy. But don't think for a moment he's not a competitor," says Coach Farris.
Miles away from Newman, at St. Augustine High School, they're all about homegrown talent too, but they're pulling a little more for the Patriots.
"BenJarvis Green-Ellis, running back for the Patriots, doing a great job extremely proud of him," said Ellis' former coach at St. Aug, Tyrone Payne.
Green-Ellis was a Purple Knight, and is now a power player for the Patriots with a name that sounds like a law firm. He graduated from St. Aug in 2003 but comes back every year.
Purple Knight running back Leonard Fournette worked out with him. "He came to camp, he showed us some moves and showed us about being a man when you graduate after high school."
Principal Don Boucree says, when Green-Ellis is with the students, he's a mentor and a teacher. "But on the field of play he is one of the best hard-hitting running backs I've seen," Boucree said.
But there's more. The Patriots strength and conditioning coach Harold Nash was a 1988 St. Aug grad, and Selvish Capers graduated in 2007. He's on the practice team for the Giants.
So, at Newman it's go Giants.
St. Aug's former coach says, ""We're pulling for the New England Patriots so we can all stand up and say..go Ben."
It's a friendly rivalry that will take a few home boys to the big stage.
