NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, the NOPD announced that Officer Stephanie Caldwell has been placed on emergency suspension without pay after being arrested for the following charges on Sunday, July 27, 2014:
- R.S. 14:37.3 Aggravated Assault (Domestic);
- R.S. 14:35.3 Simple Battery (Domestic);
- R.S. 14:99 Reckless Operation of a vehicle;
- R.S. 14:100 Hit & Run; and
- 17271 MCS 154-602 Driving against traffic.
Around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Caldwell was involved in a verbal and physical altercation in the 1700 block of North Broad Street with a 47-year-old male victim. During the incident, Caldwell attempted to strike the victim with her vehicle. The victim fled on foot in a westbound direction on North Broad Street as Caldwell pursued in her vehicle, driving against traffic on North Broad and Onzaga Street before striking a parked car. Caldwell continued onto Roussellin Drive and struck a wooden post, cracking it in half and disabling her vehicle.
After undergoing alcohol and drug testing, and receiving medical clearance, the NOPD Public Integrity Bureau arrested and booked Caldwell. The victim received no injuries as a result of the altercation and refused medical treatment.
As is NOPD protocol, Deputy Chief Arlinda Westbrook immediately placed Caldwell on emergency suspension without pay pending the outcome of a PIB investigation.
Caldwell is a 10-year veteran of the NOPD and was most recently assigned to the Special Operation Division Tactical Unit.
