NOPD First District Officers Making Mid City a Safer Place
New Orleans, LA – Members of the New Orleans Police Department’s First Police District are continuing to take a sedulous step in their initiative to rid mid city of dangerous weapons. Officers Cooper and Shannon have arrested 21-year-old Rashad Bakewell, 21-year-old Blake Ricks and 19-year-old Cecil Martin in connection with illegal possession of weapon and possession of a stolen firearm. The offensse occurred on August 18, 2010, at the intersection of
Saint Bernard Avenue and Galvez Street.
Serpas said, “This is an excellent example of good police work. The New Orleans Police Department is committed to making the city a safer place for our citizens to live.”
According to investigators, Officers Shannon and Cooper were on proactive patrol in the mid city area when they observed the driver of a silver 2003 Oldsmobile Alero commit numerous traffic infractions. Once the driver noticed the police car behind him with the lights and sirens activated, the driver refused to pull over. Officers Shannon and Cooper were able to get the vehicle stopped at the intersection of
Saint Bernard Avenue and Galvez Street.
Throughout the course of the investigation, the officers recovered a P95 Ruger handgun and a Taurus PT 140 handgun with an obliterated serial number. Both weapons were checked through the NationalCrimeInformationCenter and the Taurus PT 140 handgun was revealed to be stolen.
The suspects were transported to Central Lock-up and booked accordingly.
