Recently Superintendent Serpas announced that beginning in early September 2010 the New Orleans Police Department will conduct a Citizen’s Police Academy. The Citizen’s Academy will offer attendees an inside look at what goes into transforming a new recruit into a highly trained police officer, ready to fight crime and make a difference in our communities. This is accomplished by allowing our citizen “recruits” to participate in abbreviated segments of the very same training an NOPD recruit receives during their tenure at the academy. Upon completion of the Citizen’s Academy you will not only have a better understanding of the professional manner in which NOPD officers are trained to handle many complex and often times volatile situations on a daily basis, but further insight into how you as a citizen can make us a more effective police department .
The Citizen’s Academy will be conducted on one night a week, starting in September 2010 and continue for approximately 12 weeks. As of now there are two open slots; however the department anticipates conducting additional Citizens Academies in the future. Any persons who are interested in attending should contact me for further information.
